Directions from New York direction
- Drive along Route 27 East towards Southampton and Windsurfing Hamptons.
- Follow for one mile after the road narrows to a single lane (by the Lobster Inn)
- Turn left onto Shrubland Road
- After 0.5 miles turn left onto Cold Spring Road and follow until it reaches the Peconic Bay.
- Unload and Park!
Where to Park
To park close to the water a Southampton Parking Permit is required. But don’t despair – unload your gear and then drive back down Cold Spring Road for approx 300 yards (until you turn around the corner) and you are far enough away from the beach to be out of the permit parking zone.
What to Expect
It’s a quiet, off the beaten track beach that is used mainly by windsurfers. It is also Windsurfing Hampton’s rental and lesson location at weekends so there are always staff there willing to give friendly advice and a helping hand!
The water is warm by July and the water depth drops off quickly making beach starts a dream. |

When it Rips

Westerly winds are ideal for this location, and Southerly, off-shore winds are fun too. Winds from the North mean greater chop but can be misleading - typically, rig a little larger for Northerly winds than you would initially expect. Easterly winds are less appealing due to the landmass.

Directions from New York direction
- Follow Montauk Highway (Hwy 27).
- Turn left at Napeague Meadow Road.
- Continue to Lazy Point Road and turn right.
- Follow Lazy Point Road all the way to the beach at the end of the road.
Where to Park
If you have a local permit, life is all good at Lazy Point Road and you can park right next to the launch beach. For the rest of us... park 300 yards back up the road, past the sign. When it's warm and windy you will get a ticket if you park too close! But it's worth the short walk to enjoy the Napeague waters.
What to Expect
To sum up Napeague Harbor in a single word... shallow! A large portion of the water is chest-to-waist deep and perfect for practising new moves. It's no coincidence that Napeague Harbor is the location used by ABK when they offer their training course in the Spring and Fall. Facilities are as sparse as you would expect, but the water more than makes up for it! Keep you eyes open for Kiteboarders who also enjoy the shallows of Napeague. |

When it Rips

South West, South, South East, East and North East are the best winds for Napeague. But no wind is truly awful.
